The Tank Crew’s
‘Splatter’ Mask

‘Goggles, Steel, with chain mail for use in Tanks’ is the classic British War Office nomenclature description of what was more commonly known on the battlefield as a ‘Splatter’ mask, a somewhat innocuous nickname for a lifesaving piece of equipment.

Designed to protect tank crews from shrapnel known as ‘splash’ which could cause severe injuries, this treasured artefact is a lasting testament to the wartime heroism and stoicism of troops fighting on the treacherous frontline battlefields at the time.
