CLAN COLQUHOUN COUNTRY ADVENTURES

The Skiing
Chieftain

❖ Sir Ivar Colquhoun ❖

There was once a man named Ivar Colquhoun who seemed happiest whenever a journey lay ahead of him. While Loch Lomond would always be home, his adventures took him far beyond its shores.

As a young adult he travelled to Finland to work in a lumber camp among the forests and deep winter snow. Then came war. In the army, Ivar was selected for a specialist ski battalion, training to cross snowy landscapes with speed and endurance.

Later, Ivar served during the siege of Tobruk, one of the most demanding campaigns of the Second World War. When peace returned, so did Ivar to his home. In 1948, he became Chief of the Clan, taking responsibility for Rossdhu, the Luss Estate and the landscape his family had called home for generations.

Ivar loved sailing, shooting and birdwatching, and spent much of his life protecting the beauty of Loch Lomond. He resisted threats to the landscape and worked to secure a future for the estate, ensuring it could continue to thrive in changing times.

The young adventurer who once crossed snowy wildernesses on skis never lost his curiosity about the world. He simply turned it towards a different challenge: caring for a place he loved. Thanks to his stewardship, the loch, hills, forests and wildlife that shaped his story remain at the heart of Luss today.
