Ithell Colquhoun steps into the clan's story as an outside figure of vivid originality and a life propelled by imagination, intellect and a quietly fearless spirit.

Born in India, a polymath of the twentieth century, Ithell moved between painting, poetry and the occult, forging a practice that was both disciplined and daring.

Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in the late 1920s and later exhibiting alongside Dalí and Ernst, Ithell absorbed the language of Surrealism only to challenge it and make it unmistakably her own — a woman working with striking independence within a movement so often defined by men.

Though her life unfolded away from Luss, Ithell's work carries a heightened sense of place. Hers was a creative wanderlust that feels as expansive, adventurous and mysterious as the landscape itself.
