Two Months in Luss
We opened the doors again on the tenth of July, and the summer here does what a summer on Loch Lomond has always done. It fills the village, and it asks very little of us. Two months on, with the nights beginning to draw in, it feels like the right moment to say what we have made, and what is coming.
Eight Hundred Years, One Family
The coaching inn has stood on this site for eight hundred years, at the centre of an estate the Colquhoun family still hold. Forty-five thousand acres, wrapped around the village.
The Restoration
The restoration was Russell Sage's, top to toe. There are fifteen bedrooms and no two of them are the same. And there is The Estate Map Room, where you can settle in for a whisky tasting, or curl up with a good book in front of the fire.
The Days
The days are the other half of it, and every one of our experiences carries the name of a Colquhoun, because every one of them came from this family and this ground. You can go up onto the estate in the old Land Rover, to where the road stops. You can take the speedboat out across the loch and round the islands. You can spend a morning at the long table making a wreath from what was cut on the estate a few hours earlier. Or you can walk the village, the church and the graveyard with somebody who knows whose names those are.
This is not an inn with things to do nearby. It is an estate you stay on.
And now the season turns.
And we sit right at the foot of the Highlands.
